As people in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne emerge from lockdown, it has struck me how many are re-assessing their lives after the biggest reset the world has ever seen.
This includes relationships, leisure time, travel plans and of course work. In fact, companies around the world are calling it The Great Resignation, or The Great Exodus, as people quit their jobs in droves after a period of contemplation during the pandemic.
It reminded me of this piece by Andy Molinsky, where he compared a career to a house: “When you originally bought your house, you had certain requirements. But since then, your priorities may have changed or maybe you have simply outgrown it. Do you move, renovate, or stay put?”
‘Renovating’ your job may mean prioritising the aspects of it that you enjoy, and delegating other parts to someone else. Or it may mean having the conversation around the flexibility to work from home some of the time.
A move might be changing employers within the same industry, ‘downsizing’ to work that is less stressful with fewer hours, or seeking a new career path altogether.
Employers will need to pre-empt The Great Resignation by having meaningful discussions with their staff at all levels to ensure they retain a committed workforce.
What are your next steps – renovate, move or stay put?
